"INFO: The team previously at hannahpad Canada launched their own new brand, illum! These blog posts have been written when we used to run hannahpad Canada. All information is still relevant and everything is the same! We simply changed the brand that we offer. :slightly_smiling_face: "

Okay ladies, shut the doors, sit back, relax, and put on some music - because it’s time to have an important conversation about the best ways to maintain one’s “lady garden”.

Paying attention to pubic hair grooming is a vital aspect of maintaining overall hygiene. Good hygienedown there equates to better health and more comfort - which then contributes to a better life experience.

This is such a juicy topic and if you’re here, we know you’re excited to get the 411 - so let’s start!

Why Do We Have Pubic Hair?

We’re starting with this key question because women all over the world are still not really decided if it’s better “to hair” or “not to hair”. Of course, nature is known for creating beautiful systems whether in the human body or outside of it - systems where nothing goes to waste. So surely pubic hair must have a functional purpose. And indeed, it does.

Pubic hair is there to provide cushion and protect the sensitive skin of the genital area from friction. The genital area is prone to high levels of friction as we walk, sit, and go about our day. Friction can lead to skin abrasion and irritation which then weakens the skin’s defenses, making it more prone to infections. The layer of hair, when cared for properly, is also an addedprotection against bacteria and other pathogens.

So whether this is the first time you’re hearing this or you just need a refreshing reminder... pubic hair is nothing to be ashamed of!

To Hair or Not to Hair

Indeed, that is the question! We just talked about how functional pubic hair is in providing protection against friction and pathogens - so ispubic hair removal still on the table? Indeed it is.

In this day and age of information overload, sources of information tend to conflict with each other - some telling you to leave pubic hair alone and some telling you to get rid of it. Whatever they may say, this is your body so no one can tell you what you should or should not do. At the end of the day, your decision should come from what is the most comfortable and healthy option for you. Because truth be told, there are advantages and disadvantages to both options.

Whatever choice you make, as long as you are able to reinforce it with the right care practices, then that’s fine. And if you’re not comfortable with anything you tried, then you can always change your mind.

So let’s explore the advantages and disadvantages of these options.

What Will Happen If I Decide To Let Nature Take Its Course?

Let’s explore the first option of just letting pubic hair grow.

Advantages

We’ve touched on this earlier. Having pubic hair provides a cushion to protect the sensitive skin of the genital area from friction. Friction can cause skin abrasion and irritation which are not only uncomfortable, but also lessens the integrity of the skin. In extreme cases, this can lead to infections. Moreover the layer of hair serves as a sort of coat that can protect against bacteria and other pathogens.

Another added benefit of avoiding hair removal is being 100% safe from the cuts and skin irritation that can be caused by some hair removal methods such as shaving, epilating, waxing, and so on.

Disadvantages

Each woman is unique. Some have more pubic hair growth and some have less. Having too much of it can be uncomfortable for some. Moreover, in hot and humid climates, pubic hair, like any hair of the body, can trap more sweat, oil, and bacteria. This can result in a stronger odor in that region and can even be the breeding ground for infection. To remedy this, it is important to wash the region regularly - just like any part of the body. It is also important to wipe it dry after a shower and after using the bathroom.

Another disadvantage of having pubic hair is that in the event that you get pubic lice (or crabs), it can lead to a lot of discomfort in that region. But then again, pubic lice can transfer to all kinds of course hair like eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits, and so on. So it’s only a matter of not giving them a place to stay down there.

What Will Happen If I Choose to Go Hairless?

This is a bit trickier because of the various ways that you can have pubic hair removed. However, there are major advantages and disadvantages shared by all.

Advantages

A major advantage is that sweat, oil, and bacteria cannot accumulate like it would if you had the lady garden. This reduces the odor of the area and can also lessen the likelihood of infection.  This is the most felt during the menstrual period. Most women would agree that the area is a whole lot easier to keep clean and dry with no hair.

Disadvantages

One major disadvantage is of course not having the cushion against friction. This can lead to uncomfortable skin abrasion in some women and wearing tight clothing around the area may aggravate this even more.

Cleanliness, Comfort, and Cotton

Whatever way that you choose to groom your lady garden, it is important to wash your bikini area regularly to prevent infection. Also, choosing the rightpanty liners and menstrual pads is important.

Did you know that reusable cotton pads can give you a world of comfort that you may never have experienced before? And that applies whether you have hair down there or not.

Not only are reusable cotton menstrual pads and panty liners soft, they are also far more breathable than their disposable counterparts. This means less sweat and less moisture trapped - which feels better and will help keep infections away. Oh and as if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also get savings and help the planet.
